This map shows North American Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Currently, there are over 2,000 MPAs in North America, covering 15% (more than 4,000,000 square kilometers) of the national waters of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Networks of MPA managers and practitioners, like the North American Marine Protected Areas Network (NAMPAN), increase our collective ability to establish and manage MPAs and provide opportunities to share effective conservation and restoration approaches across similar sites in different regions for better conservation outcomes.
